LA Zoo Sketches

My husband and I went to the zoo today to sketch the animals. It was a great time!

I really wanted to draw the apes and monkeys... so we started with the gorillas, they sat pretty still for us, unless they were wandering around...

The orangutans literally gave us 30 second poses... Moving from one pose, smoothly into another...

The Chimpanzees were moving around a lot... One of the giraffs was trying to reach a branch...

The gibbons were the best part of the trip, they gave us 5 - 10 second gestures...

We got lucky with the mandrills, the zoo keeper was feeding them...

By the time we got to the lemurs, my hand was tired of drawing... drawn a more graphic style...

Blur Wins MSNBC's Best Game Animations 2011

We won MSNBC's Best Game Animations 2011 for our Star Wars: The Old Republic cinematic trailer.

Prey 2 was nominated. We didn't work on the Assassin's Creed but I thought that was incredibly well done!

Unfortunately, I was sick and missed it. So no drawings by me. But, I did make the costume. The intention was to make this costume.

But it took a lot longer than I thought it would and I only managed to make the bikini top and loin cloth. Still glad it all worked out. I will probably keep working on the costume to finish it for another drawing session since Red Sonja is such a fun character.

Time: Approx 1 week (hours unknown).

Materials: Modified brown bikini top, Brown cotton fabric (from a queen sheet set), Silver sequins (40mm, small hole in top), Silver thread, Brown quilt runners (for straps), Black Velcro (on straps for potential adjustments), Metal rings (from a belt). (I should mention that discount and 2nd hand stores are the best places to find supplies for costumes).

The model, Aycil Yeltan, wearing the costume. The boots she brought go well with it.

I have been so excited about this project, it came together really well! Not only is the editing and theme really cool, the Trent Reznor song is awesome! Also, I have been a huge fan of the Girl With the Dragon Tattoo novels and original films.

Went to Naughty Dog (game studio in Santa Monica) tonight for some life drawing. They have a pretty nice set up there. I had a successful drawing night, in that it was the best ever! I love the model we had, she has the perfect figure (very renaissance) for study and made all the right poses. Below is a 10 min drawing. Of course, I didn't finish it in the 10 min, I took it home and finished it.

Toddler Bust WIP

My next project is to finish this sculpture I started last year. Not sure why I stopped working on it. Probably because I'm working on the hair and that's the boring part for me. I haven't ever shown pictures of it because at the time I was going to make my short film and this is associated with it. The designs for it are in a previous post. She doesn't look quite like the designs, but hey, I'm a beginner at sculpting. I'll get better. She suffered some damage during our move, so I have to fix some flaws, I want to add more details to her eyes, and smooth her surface out more. There is a lot of detail and volume and form that needs to be added to her hair. And the hair on the back of her head need to suggest that her hair is tightly pulled into ponytails more. Her ponytails are separate because, when she is finished, it will be easier to cook everything separate and then insert them and glue them on. Time: unknown (I'm bad at keeping track). Materials: aluminium foil, aluminium wire, super skulpey.

Paper Frog Project Complete

PI've finally finished the frog's skateboard. Yay! The skateboard is somewhat functional in that the wheels can turn. The wheels are lores and not perfectly round, but I think this just adds to the paper-made look. I did a somewhat ok job with colouring the board with markers but I think the grungy look works. Done with this project, and on to the next!

Old Cross-Stitch Project

While going through a few boxes today, I found an old cross-stitch project I did when I was about 14 yrs old. I did a lot of cross-stitching when I was younger, because my grandma and mom did. They taught me this craft. This one was the biggest and the last one. It took me about a year, as I recall. I learned a lot from cross stitching. For one, you have to be patient because they take a long time to make. Also, you need to be very accurate and precise. When you are following a pattern you have to be able to keep track of where you are in the pattern, you do a lot of counting. You have to make sure you have the right colours of thread (sorted by a coded numerical system) and right type of fabric. There are also different sizes of stitching, some are so small that you need a magnifying glass to sew them. And be prepared to get your fingers pricked repeatedly! So, cross-stitching gave me a lot of skills that I'm sure have contributed to the quality of my work over the years, even though I don't have an interest in this craft anymore. What's funny is that after about 17 years, I still haven't gotten around to framing this.

Would anyone of you designers be interested in actually making a design for my frog's skateboard? I think it would be awesome. If anyone is interested, let me know! The design will be cropped at the end corners because the ends of the skateboard are rounded. And you'll want the edges of the design to bleed over the dimension limits. DIMENSIONS: Top or Bottom: 2 7/16 " by 9 6/8", Height of board all around: 1/8".

Well for some strange reason, I couldn't take a break after finishing my frog and went right into working on his little skateboard. Below is a work in progress of the wheels. The parts are sooo tiny and tedious to handle. Doesn't help that I have fricken huge hands... But I enjoy the challenge. I didn't have textures for the skateboard parts for some reason, they got lost or something, so it printed them out without colour. I'll just colour it in when I assemble it with magic markers or acrylic paint or something. So this is what I'm doing on today.

Life Drawing went really well last night. We had a great model, one of my favourites! Only a few people showed up, I was bummed about that, but my drawings came out ok. Ever since I left college I've been using conte and giant pads of newsprint to life draw. I feel that these media have really retarded my drawing skills. I'm switching to coloured pencil or pen from now on! The brown paper that I was using was great to draw on, but really bad for taking pictures of. Or maybe its the combination of the blue pencil on it.

I finally finished him! I'm so happy and feel like I really accomplished something! It's so amazing to be able to take a computer generated character (that I created on the computer in 2004 and since then could only view him on a screen) and make it tangible. Being able to hold him in my hands, is like holding a new born baby. Ok, well maybe not exactly (I mean, its lighter), but its the next best thing! He is supposed to be holding a skateboard in his right hand, that's why he looks like he's gripping something, but I might take a bit of a break before I work on the skateboard. It'll be a lot more tedious than he ever was because of tiny pieces. I can't say that I'll never attempt a large paper craft project such as this again. It sure did take a long time. So long that I stopped keeping track of time. But It'll be a while until I do another one. I have other projects that are partly completed that need to be finished and some in mind that I really want to do. Here are some pics:

Paper Frog Almost Done!!!

Just wanted to post a pic of the frog's interior before I close him up. As you can see inside, I needed to do some patching up in his leg/crotch area. I had connected one of his legs but didn't like how he stood, so I ended up severing it and re-attaching it. His arms and legs gave me a lot of trouble trying to connect them to his body. I applied several layers of glue to make sure they don't come unattached. Pretty confident I'll be finished tomorrow! Then on to his skateboard.

Limbs are all assembled and ready to combine together. He is pretty bug-eyed right now, but after I build his eyelashes he'll look better. I've reinforced his eyes with strips of paper just in case someone decides to push on his eyeballs, so they won't get lost inside his head. The glue tabs make a really neat design on the inside of the papercraft.

Short Film Boards

I decided to finally upload the storyboards for a short film idea I had. I used photoshop and our Cintiq to render these boards. The quality gets kinda rough as it goes because I spent less and less time putting it together and kinda rushed the end. I've entered some narration so you can tell whats going on. 1) View of a Shopkeeper in a China shop. Shopkeeper shines his dishes. Grandma and Toddler walk down side walk outside the China shop, they enter the shop. 2) Shopkeeper welcomes Grandma and Toddler. He takes them to the back of the shop to a teacup display. Grandma looks over the display. 3) Toddler sits on floor, appears bored. Looks around and sees a porcelain bird. Toddler unbuckles her harness and approaches the bird. 4) Shopkeeper sees Toddler with bird, runs over to her and takes bird away, placing it higher out of reach. 5) Shopkeeper returns to Grandma who has chosen to purchase a teacup. As Shopkeeper is ringing up the purchase, Toddler climbs up a step ladder onto a shelf. 6) Toddler reaches the bird and picks it up. Shopkeeper sees Toddler climbing on the shelves. Toddler climbs up onto top shelf. In the process she knocks a big porcelain dish with her foot. Shopkeeper manages to run over just in time to catch falling dish. 7) Grandma is counting out change for her purchase. Toddler is running along top of shelf, knocking dishes off as she goes. Shopkeeper keeps up alongside catching them. Cut back to Grandma counting change at a snail's pace. 8) Cut back to Toddler running along shelf with Shopkeeper catching falling dishes. Cut back to Grandma slowly counting change looking oblivious to the entire situation going on behind her. 9) Toddler jumps from one shelf to another. Slow-motion shot of Toddler and bird mid-jump appearing to fly. Toddler reaches next shelf and force of her landing makes shelf shake back and fourth. 10) Toddler slips. Cut to dishes wobbling. Toddler falls. Shopkeeper catches her and places her on the floor. Cut to Grandma finished with paying for purchase. Returns Toddler to Grandma. 11) Grandma puts harness back on Toddler and picks her up. Shopkeeper wraps up the teacup and gives it in a bag to Grandma. Grandma turns her back to leave, Shopkeeper wipes the sweat from his brow. Grandma reaches exit and waves to Shopkeeper, he waves back. 12) Grandma swings around and exits the shop's front door. Strap hanging from Toddler's harness swings up and wraps around a support post of a tall display case. Door closes on the strap. Outside, Grandma yanks on the strap (she assumes it is only caught in the door.) Strap comes free and display falls over. Shopkeeper freaks out and races to stop the case from falling. 13) A sequence that pans across the entirety of the shop as the display shelves fall like dominoes and dishes come crashing down. After the dust settles, cut to Shopkeeper freaking out or weeping. The End. I have decided to abandon this short film and focus on other art forms that I'm more interested in. Also, I didn't feel that this idea was good enough for a short film. For animation it would be a lot of fun, I'm sure, but there isn't much of a story, just a series of events. There isn't any character development. Also, we don't really sympathize with any of the characters. I also realized after drawing these boards that this type of idea has already been done before and I'm sure many times. Look at the Roger Rabbit short film, "Somethin's Cookin'" with baby Hermin. Here is a link in case you haven't seen it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sLNqtU-gYPc . The characters are different, but the idea is pretty much the same, and not nearly as good.

These are the tiny parts of the last finger that I put together tonight. Still lots to do but really happy to be finished building the tedious parts. Each finger took about 1.5 hours to assemble with thin metal tools since my fingers are too big to fit inside them.

Elderly female Bust Sculpt

I sculpted this bust out of Super Sculpey about 8 months ago. I wasn't going to reveal it since it was originally for a short film idea I have and was thinking of making. But I don't plan to create my short film and intend to continue to work on sculpure, beading, sewing and puppets instead. This bust is 7" tall. The central core is made of densely crushed-up aluminium foil and a few aluminum wires for stability. The outer 0.5 - 1" thickness and surface are Super Sculpey. After finishing the sculpt, I had baked her in our home oven for approximately 20 min. This bust took unknown hours to sculpt since I did it over a series of months and didn't keep track. After having used traditional water based clay, self-hardening clay, and Super Sculpey, I find that Super Sculpey is my media of preference. Since I prefer to work on a small scale, get interrupted for several weeks at a time while working on a sculpt and can bake/fire the sculpts in the oven, this media works best for me.

I spent the past 2 months working on these jewelry sets. I really enjoyed making them and I'm proud to have come up with my own designs. I don't know if its all of the Tim Burton influence lately, but stripes are really appealing to me right now. I decided to go with that in these creations. I made them for special women in my family and friends and I hope they will enjoy them as much as I enjoyed making them! I wish I could be with you all this season, but please know that I was thinking of you while I was making this for you! They are on their way in the mail, I sent them out yesterday! Bracelets 6 - 10 h each. Earrings 2 - 3 h each. Rings 1 h each.

I've been beading a bit lately. I made this choker necklace to go with a flapper Halloween costume I never ended up wearing this year. Hopefully I'll have the chance to wear the costume another time! Also below is a bracelet I made for a friend. I tried a new pattern for this one. It's more of a grid pattern but this type of weaving takea 2x as long as the patterns I normally use because this one requires extra looping. It is extra strong though, that's for sure. Maybe I'll get faster at it since I love it so much!

Here's a little something I made for my dad for Christmas last year. A traveling checker set! He took the pictures for me, thanks Dad! You can't see it but the other side of the checker pieces have japanese patterned material on them. The total time to make this was about 40 hr. Materials used: felt, velvet, cotton material, ribbon... I used velvet and felt not only because they look nice and I like working with them, but also for their ability to hold each other and keep each other from slipping while traveling. No need to worry about your checker pieces slipping off your board while you're on the move!

I went to a sculpture studio in Santa Monica with a few friends to go life drawing Sunday night. It was an amazing experience! The studio looked like a small warehouse from the outside but inside it was a big open space with hundreds of different unfinished/finished/partial sculptures all over the place. The floor was coated with terracotta powder of some sort. We entered kinda late and when we walked in, we entered a room full of artists of all levels on wooden art benches drawing 2 life-drawing models on a stand. One of the models was playing violin while the artists painted her. The other artist did a fire throwing show for us half way through. Everyone was friendly. It was such a great experience that I actually came out with a few decent drawings, in colour no less!Both drawings were 20 min each.

I wanted to post some pictures of a few things I made for family members for Christmas last year. They were a lot of fun to make! This first one is a pillow I made. The Corgi image is made from felt and sewn on in layers. It is about 16 inches in length The following are a series of pin cushions I made from larger patterns. They are about 4 inches in length each.

Beaded Bracelets

Here are some beaded bracelets I made a few months ago. Just haven't had the chance to put them on the blog. I learned a lot about beading when I made these bracelets. I found that the quality of bead and uniformity of size and shape of the beads is a real big deal. This is very important when making jewelry like these where the beads are woven together instead of strung together like typical jewelry. This first multi-coloured bracelet was made with cheap beads which turned out to be a mess of different sizes and shapes. I had to sort through the beads just to get ones that were close enough to look somewhat similar, hense the messiness of it. This green bracelet the beads were all the exact shape and size so it turned out really nice. I like the feel of it like a snake skin. This black bracelet required a lot of counting in order to make the pattern even but thankfully the black seed beads were all exactly the same size that it worked out beautifully. I actually made 2 of these since I liked it so much! I ended up trashing the bracelets in the previous blog entry (See Beadwork: 2.21.2010). One of them fell apart and the other wouldn't hold together to stay on my wrist. It's a learning process...

Its a little late to make a Christmas post, but I wanted to display the felt ornaments I made for us for our Christmas tree. Since we were so busy in December and traveling to South Africa during the holiday, we didn't get to put up our tree. Maybe next year!

Felt Sushi Set

I made this for a good friend of mine.I made it out of felt and poly-fill. For the box I used foam-core board and sewed the felt around it.

I recently made these hand-sewn ladies' hats. I saw a hat online that I really liked and decided to make it myself. It took a bit of guesswork as I wasn't working from a pattern. They're more of a fancy sleeping cap I think.

Fuzzy Dog

I originally made this fuzzy dog for a relative but I decided against it and decided to keep him. The reason being is that I couldn't find those little plastic beans for stuffing, so I filled his legs and arms with rice to add weight to him. After making him I realized that if anyone were to get him wet, he would be ruined because of the rice. So I will probably make something else for that relative. I got the pattern for him from an Aranzi Aronzo book. He's so cute!

New Studio

I haven't posted anything in a while because I started a new job in April! I'm working at Rhythm and Hues as a Technical Animation TD. I can't go into much detail about the job, but its great! I love the studio, really happy to have found a job too! So I won't have any 3d or art posts for my blog for a while. Probably not until some time in 2010. Felt Animal Magnets

I made some cute felt animal magnets from patterns in a japanese book I bought the Japanese district. Since I can't read Japanese, I have no idea what the book is called, but the designs are so darn cute I couldn't resist to make these adorable gifts for family! In order to turn these little characters into magnets. I came up with an idea to put an upside down pocket on their backs, where I slipped a round (very strong!) magnet inside. This way they will not lose their magnets, but they can also be removed. My favorite Character was this little cheetah/leopard kitty. I am not sure its the shape of his head that is so appealing or what, but he's so darn cute! The spotted felt is really great to work with, and was a great find at my favorite craft store, Micheal's.

Turtle Pin Cushion

The past few weeks I've started making plush toys from patterns I found in some books that I bought. Even-though some of the books are in Japanese and I can't read them, the patterns are very easy to follow. I find sitting and sewing a very soothing activity. Its very rewarding too! Here is a turtle pin cushion gift that I made for family: Here are the beginnings of a turtle pin cushion. Made from scraps of material from fabric and craft stores. I scaled the pattern down very small, since he is only a pin cushion and the pattern was for a pillow. He's hiding inside his shell, before I turn him right-side out. Say howdy Mr. Turtle! The instructions for the pattern told me to leave the hole in the side of the body to stuff him and then sew the hole up, leaving an obvious seam. But I found a better place to put the hole for stuffing is under his neck. The seam is practically hidden. He makes an excellent pin cushion. Plus we don't have to worry about him getting away with our pins since he's so slow. I found this pattern from Aranzi Aronzo Books to be an excellent one to follow and I will have fun making more gifts from the patterns in their books!

My Workstation

This is our desk and computer station at home. We only have a one-bedroom apartment right now, so everything is in the living room. Eventually I want to get a bigger place and have a studio for everything art and work related. The bin on top is full of tools and patterns. The bins underneath are full of fabrics and foam. This is a roll of foam we use for the skull, hands and bodies of our puppets. A few weekends ago I went on a shopping spree in the garment district, searched through the scrap bins at a fabric store and bought a bunch of plush and felt toy books from a book store in the Japanese district. Lots of fun!

Puppets!

For the past 3 months, my husband, friend and I have been on a puppet high. We've been going to see any puppet play we can, we've been browsing the internet for any puppet imagery or video clips we can find and we've gotten into making puppets and puppeteering. Here are some of the puppets I've made. Suzie Q-T was the first puppet I made. We bought the patterns for the body from www.projectpuppet.com and scrounged all of the materials from different fabric and craft stores. I have a lot of ideas for these two baby puppets, Peter and Penny that I made. We are planning to put together youtube puppet shorts sometime soon. This furry little guy is a work in progress at the moment. He's going to be a lot of fun to play with. Below are images of what goes in to making him: This is the skull of the puppet. Made from apholstry foam, its light and durable. This is a picture of the furry puppet's body inside out. All of the puppets are sewn by completely by hand. I don't use a sewing machine (I don't even know how to use one). More to come!

I finally finished my 3d character rig and started posing him. I have to add tonnes of details in Zbrush and fix some of the intersections. Oh ya, plus he needs hair, and a beard. Here are some screen shots: To see an image of the character design reference that I am working from, click HERE.

Zbrush Model, finished

Finally finished my David Thewlis bust model in Zbrush. It took me total 2 weeks, about 4 - 6 hours per day. I learned a lot about the program while making it. Looking forward to making more things with it! Below is a turntable video. Close-up of details.

Zbrush Model, update

My Thewlis bust Zbrush model is almost finished. I just need to add pores. Below are a few jpg's with different shaders. I love this bronze shader and what is so cool about it is that you can work on the model while the shaders such as this are on the model. Zbrush rocks!!!

Facial Rig

Here's a model and facerig I developed in my free time at home. My husband, Jason Hendrich animated it for me. The face rig and blendshapes took a total of 3 weeks to complete. The model took a month or so to build from scratch. He animated it in 2 hours. What a team we make!!!
